Dreams and the Unthink

posted by Andre Yap, Ripple100

Our Dream.Haven partners Ken and Slate invited me to do the Grove’s Social Media Synch this morning.

So we hatched something called UNTHINK: 60 Minutes to Challenge What You Know About Social Media.

This was show, don’t tell. We challenged our motley crew to unthink social media (how-to’s, tools, tricks and best practices). Instead we embarked on a mini exploration - see if we could get to some commonly understood social media wisdom - by talking life. What did each of use care about? What were each of doing to make it happen?

Here’s what we shared as best I could remember (I did not take notes) and in the order that we shared them:

  • Andre Yap (@andreayap) doesn’t care about being an expert so much as getting the questions right and working with others to find often complex and ever-evolving answers
  • David Parmet (@davidparmet) cares about small biz use of social media marketing - enough to join us from the New Canaan - New York border
  • Lee Cruz (@leecruz) cares about every good cause that makes New Haven a better place (everytime I see Lee he has a new project for/with me; this Ecuador one is a winner!)
  • Melinda Papowitz cares not so much about making more money as finding something she really cares about. (she also cared enough about Ripple100 Storytelling to join social media Synch on a bitter cold morning - sorry Melinda, we’ll catch up on that next time!)
  • Carlos Eyzaguirre (@quitoeyz) cares about economic development in New Haven and has found outlets in both the impoverished and entrepreneurial ranks of our citizens. I know because Ripple100 has been a grateful beneficiary of Carlos’ caring.
  • Slate Ballard (@slateb) cares about ideas, collaboration, his 5-year old daughter, and her new chicken (and the thousand and one things The Grove is hatching every day, including New Haven’s first unoffice party this Thursday).
  • Ken Janke (@groveNHV) cares about dreams, city transformation, and (see Slate Ballard’s above). Ken also gave me a sneak peak at our christmas gifts from the Grove this Thursday. Took my breath away, brother.
  • Matt Browning (@matthewbrowning) cares about healthcare, revolution, and many other New Haven fronts (latest thingamajig is #FashionHaven). More and more lately Matt also cares that he no longer feels isolated, that he finds kindred souls everywhere to take up causes with him.
  • Alan Carniol (@careercadence) cares that nobody should have to be in a career that “doesn’t do it for them”. Alan is the rare Yalie who’s stuck around after graduation to follow his dream in its many iterations.
  • Mason Rabinowitz (@wordmason) cares about the process of creating and creativity - enough so that he started Create 96 with co-Grover @jkubarych
  • Amy Romano (@midwifeamy) cares about healthy pregnancies and beyond, including healthier eating for herself, which she opened up to…via Twitter.
  • Glen McDermot (@ievolvetraining) of Canberra cares about tangible legacies of his creative genius, which is currently expressed in his training software.
  • Jeff Kubarych (@jkubarych) cares about the process of creativity and wants every human being to experience it. As a result, he partnered with @wordmason to create Create 96. (Okay the mystery is killing me - what’s with 96?)
  • Dave Halliday cares about his next stop - what’s next after TV production, stock trading, and a Yale MBA? I spoke to Dave afterward and suggested who knows, maybe Ripple100…

So, out of the sharing we saw patterns of equal use - for social media and for life.

  • Know what you care about
  • Meet people, find kindred spirits.
  • Be yourself.
  • Keep an open mind, be prepared to break down silos, explore, learn, embrace new things.

What does this have to do with Dream.Haven? Go back to the 4 bullet points above. Isn’t that the stuff that dreams (come true) are made of?

The next DREAM.HAVEN storytelling booth will be open Thursday, Dec 9th. Join us from 6:00PM to 8:00 for a big night at The Grove. It’s The Grove’s first annual Un-Office Holiday Party (details below). Come share your dream. Did you find your dream? Or did your dream find you? What was the aha moment when you knew you had to live your dream? Who are the people of your dream? How does the world change in your dream? How have you put yourself on the line for your dream? What’s your dream - in one word?
